Evidence for the Link Between Vitamin D Deficiency and Heart Disease.
Scientific evidence to show that this link exits continues to grow. An article (1) published in 1989 in Lancet, a respected British Medical Journal, a researcher noted a relationship between latitude and heart disease: the farther you live from the equator, the lower you are in vitamin D and the higher your risk for heart disease.
Over the years, numerous studies continue to show a relationship between low vitamin D level and heart disease. However, this vital information hardly received any public attention until 2008 when two studies finally got the attention of the news media.
In the first study (2), published in January 2008 in Circulation (the official journal of the American Heart Association), researchers followed 1739 participants for the development of heart disease. The mean follow-up was 5.4 years. These researchers found a 2-fold increase in the risk for heart disease in individuals who had a low level of vitamin D.
In the second study (3), published in the June 9, 2008 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine (the official journal of the American Medical Association), investigators looked at the level of vitamin D in men who developed a heart attack during a 10 year follow-up period. The results were stunning: the lower the vitamin D level, the higher the risk for heart attack. Men whose vitamin D level was at least 30 ng/ml had half the risk of a heart attack compared to men who had a vitamin D level below 30 ng/ml.

How did these results come about? It’s still not totally clear, but there are plenty of possibilities. If you’re overweight, excess body fat absorbs and holds onto vitamin D, making it unavailable to the rest of your body. When your body doesn’t have enough of it, it interferes with the functioning of other hormones, like leptin, which signals to the brain, “You’re full! Stop eating!”
There’s also the correlation between calcium, vitamin D and weight loss. Studies have shown that increased calcium intake may benefit weight loss, due to its effect on how the body breaks down and stores fat. Vitamin D and calcium can usually be found hand in hand in the same kinds of foods, like milk, cheese and other dairy products.
Only Time Will Tell
Is vitamin D really the weight loss solution we’ve been looking for? It clearly seems to be important in regulating weight, but more research will be needed to understand the body mechanics involved. For now, continue to eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise – a surefire way to maintain a healthy weight. And continue to supplement your diet with vitamin D – with so many proven health benefits, you can’t go wrong.

Improving L&D with Leveraging
If we look at how learning and development supports the organization across the enterprise, we can identify economies in how we work with internal clients. If L&D supports business functions vertically across the company, we need to identify common required processes at project start and completion. Additionally, recognizing the different needs by business unit can help tailor how to approach program planning and project management needs. L&D can create a best practice approach around project planning, implementation, and management to help streamline efforts, and allow clients to be more proactive in their learning needs and development.
A first step toward streamlining work and provided services is to identify the type of work, projects, and events typically offered to your clients. Secondly determine around which functions or services a best practice could be implemented. For example, what constitutes a project in your organization and for your clients? The Project Management Institute defines a project as: “….. a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. …..it is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations.” What commonalities exist within your definition of a project where you can build on what’s been created?
After defining what a project means, the next step is to segregate projects from BAU – business as usual. In other words, how we work with clients on business as usual functions may be set a part from a formal project and not need the same level of involvement or resources. Identify how and where in all you provide, you can save time through reuse of work already completed and sharing of lessons learned.
The bottom line is that L&D must continually observe itself and evaluate its own processes and best practices in how it serves its constituents. We certainly know that at times, senior management does likewise, often when a larger “overhaul” or a reorganization becomes necessary. By always identifying your own best practices and ensuring your team is leveraging work from one another, could possibly help you in times of restructure. Remember, the L&D function that is lean yet productive will ultimately prove beneficial to the organization.

Rickets and the associated bone deformities in children are the best known vitamin D deficiency symptoms in poor countries. But in developed countries the symptoms are subtle and may be overlooked until a person’s health is significantly compromised.
Vitamin D deficiency symptoms are most common among people who are elderly, institutionalized or hospitalized. In the United States, 60% of nursing home residents and 57% of hospitalized patients have been found to be vitamin D deficient.
But vitamin D deficiency is not restricted to the elderly or to the hospitalized. Studies have also found a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency symptoms among young adults. One study determined that nearly two thirds of healthy, young adults in Boston had symptoms of vitamin D deficiency at the end of winter.
The most extreme vitamin D deficiency symptoms are burning of the mouth and throat, nervousness, sweating of the scalp, diarrhea, insomnia, mineral weakness of the bones and nearsightedness. While these extreme symptoms are unusual in developed countries, they still exist in certain parts of the population and may be a warning sign of rickets or osteomalcia.
RICKETS AND OSTEOMALACIA
Rickets is a childhood disease characterized by impeded growth and deformed bones including bowing of the legs. In the Western world, around the year 1900, finding children younger than 2 years who were not affected by rickets would have been difficult in urban areas. But rickets was eradicated almost completely once it was discovered that it was one of the most common vitamin D deficiency symptoms. In the 1930s, the fortification of milk with 400 IU of vitamin D per quart of milk led to the most dramatic decline in the number of rickets cases in the United States. The daily consumption of a tablespoon of cod liver oil also became a common part of the daily routine for children…even if the adults didn’t swallow their own medicine. At present, premature babies are the one group that still has a relatively high risk of developing rickets. Infants who are breastfed solely as a source of nutrition for more than six months are also at increased risk.
The milder, adult form of rickets is usually referred to as osteomalacia. Osteomalacia is also caused by vitamin D deficiency or by an underlying condition which prevents proper absorption or conversion of vitamin D. In adults it is usually revealed through diffuse body pains, muscle weakness and fragile bones or stress fractures rather than the deformed bones that we associate with rickets. These symptoms can be subtle and may go undetected in the initial stages of the disease.
Osteomalacia is also rare in wealthy countries, although Muslim women wearing a chador have a higher risk of the deficiency due to underexposure to sunlight. If these women breastfeed their babies without the benefit of supplements, the children may also be at higher risk of developing Vitamin D deficiency symptoms.
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by reduced bone mineral density and increased risk of bone fractures. Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans…or 55 percent of the people 50 years of age and older. In the United States, 10 million people are estimated to have osteoporosis and another 34 million have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis. Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women and twenty per cent are men.
Vitamin D insufficiency contributes to osteoporosis by decreasing the absorption of calcium through the intestines. As bone density both builds and erodes over many years, the vitamin D deficiency symptoms may go undetected until there is a bone fracture (often of the hip or wrist) and the patient undergoes a bone density scan.
Vitamin D malnutrition may also be linked to an increased susceptibility to several chronic diseases. Research suggests these include:
High blood pressure
Cancer (breast, colon, prostrate and pancreatic cancer)
Seasonal affective disorder
Peripheral artery disease
Cognitive impairment (memory loss)
Autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes
There is also an association between low vitamin D levels and Parkinson’s disease but it is not clear whether Parkinson’s causes low vitamin D levels or whether low vitamin D levels play a role in the development of Parkinson’s disease.

D Flawless diamonds are essentially the best quality of diamonds that are available. We will however begin with the basics. Diamonds are graded according to many factors which have become termed “The 4 C’s.” These refer to certain variable characteristics which when combined result in the market value of a diamond. These characteristics are as follows.
The two characteristics we will concentrate on here are colour and clarity. Diamond colour is indicated by a letter beginning with D which represents the highest possible whiteness of a diamond. As we run along the alphabet to J, all of these colours are white. Beyond this we begin to see a slight tint of yellow which deepens the further we go. This affects the cost of the diamond with whiter colours demanding a premium in price. This has to be looked at alongside the other characteristics, especially clarity.
The clarity of a diamond is basically how clear the stone is. Marks present in diamonds are often referred to as inclusions. These can be present in any concentration. The less marks there are, the clearer the diamond is. There is no interruption for light passing into and around the stone, and this subsequently affects how the diamond handles light. The highest possible clarity is Flawless and the name is fairly self explanatory. D Flawless diamonds, our key interest here are at the highest end of the scales for colour and clarity. The clarity scale moves down from Internally Flawless to VVS1 then VVS2, to VS1 and VS2 and to SI1 and SI2. Beyond this, marks become visible to the naked eye. P1, P2 and P3 diamonds are respectively lower in quality, with P3 (P representing the word pique, which means marked) being the lowest quality possible. Even here we see marked differences between a good P3 stone and a bad P3 stone.
Getting back to D Flawless diamonds, we can see now that they represent the highest colour and clarity of diamonds, but how is this determined? Basically, any diamond that is given these grades will be subject to scrutiny in a laboratory, where all of the characteristics of the diamond are recorded and presented on a diamond certificate. There are many grading laboratories around the world with names such as the Gemological Institute of America (or GIA for short)
The other characteristics that will determine the value of D Flawless Diamonds are the carat weight and the cut. The first is the weight of the diamond. Logically, depending on how big the stone is, the value will vary. D Flawless Diamonds weighing one carat will cost much more than D Flawless Diamonds weighing half a carat. The next characteristic, the cut is also very important. Depending on how well proportioned the stone is, the light entering the stone will be handled differently. A diamond that is too shallow will allow light to pass straight through. Diamonds with a good, very good or excellent cut will provide much greater fire than diamonds with a “fair” cut grade.
